After four hours of sleep, I woke up early enough in the freezing cold to journey to the SC and sign up for the papal audience next Wednesday...how awesome! Afterwards, Greenie and I did more Firenze planning and got some paninos. We went shopping at the mall located on Via del Corso, but the saldi still wasn't that great. However, I like this new store called Jam...Urban Outfitters w/ everything. The walking tour was great as Frank, our guide, took us to Piazza Venezia to check out the monument dedicated to Vittorio Emmanuele (also known as the wedding cake or Remington typewriter by WWII soldiers). We walked to the side checking out the statue of Marcus Aurelius and not Constantine (copy but real is made of gilded bronze). We were lucky today was sunny, but very cold still. The Ancient City is definitely a sight to see with all the arcs, temples, and il Colosseo. We learned about porphyry, a purple stone indicating imperial heritage alla royal purple, that arcs are used to commemorate generals winning wars or battles and you would walk under it to show your greatness, and the temple di vesta where the vestal virgins kept the ongoing flame. If you loss your virginity, you would be buried alive while your rapist would be whipped to death. Il Colosseo is named after Nero, the crazy emperor who built a statute of himself (colossus) next to the stadium. We took expensive pics with phony soldiers and then got back to class late. For dinner, we went out for Mallory's 21st bday in Piazza Navona. The meal was good as I had Tagliarini con Astia (fine noodles with lobster in a thin tomato sauce). Afterwards, we went to Testaccio, a local nightlife scene, and checked out Charro Cafe. It was a salsa bar and somewhat full tonight. Once again, the six-pack along with Blake, Lauren, and Lisa dropped it like it's hot. On the way home, Greenie and I got charged an outrageous fee as the taxi driver took a roundabout way to get to Residence Candia. Albeit, a fun night!
